UK's Osborne to admit growth, debt-cutting falling (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? British finance minister George Osborne will pave the way for several more years of deep government spending cuts, when he reveals forecasts for much weaker growth and a borrowing overshoot of 86 billion pounds over the coming years.

Osborne's autumn budget statement at 1230 GMT is expected to show independent growth forecasts have been slashed for the next couple of years, reflecting in part a rapid deterioration of the global economic outlook since the March budget.

The prospect of years of fiscal austerity will fuel anger among unions on the eve of a one-day strike by 2 million public sector workers over government spending cuts that will make them pay more and work longer for their pensions.

The Office for Budget Responsibility, the body Osborne set up just over a year ago to make forecasts free from ministerial interference, is expected to cut its March prediction of 1.7 percent growth in 2011 and 2.5 percent in 2012 by at least half, bringing them more into line with most private sector analysts.

That means public borrowing is likely to fall much more slowly than the OBR predicted 8 months ago.

People familiar with the OBR's forecasting process say it will fall to around 129 billion pounds ($200.5 billion) in 2011/12 rather than the 122 billion forecast previously, and 117 billion in 2012/13, rather than 101 billion.

Totted up over four years, that results in a borrowing overshoot of 86 billion pounds.

"The Chancellor's fiscal targets further out now look unattainable under the current public spending and revenue plans, given likely extended weak economic activity," said Howard Archer, economist at IHS Global Insight.

The OECD rich nations' economic think-tank said on Monday that Britain will slip back into a modest recession early next year. It lowered its 2012 growth forecast to just 0.5 percent and urged the Bank of England to expand its money-printing program.

The higher borrowing forecasts will leave Osborne with a wafer-thin margin to meet the coalition government's fiscal targets, which require a budget surplus for non-investment spending within five years, as well as a falling ratio of public debt as a share of GDP by 2015/16.

Likely downward revisions by the OBR to the amount of slack in Britain's economy, and its trend rate of growth, will mean the government's cyclically-adjusted current budget will only scrape into surplus by 2016/17 - two years later than the OBR forecast in March, and right at the end of the five-year time limit.

Osborne will reiterate his commitment to eliminating the structural budget deficit - the part that is not the result of changes in the economic cycle - over a rolling five-year period, and argue that wavering from the path of austerity risks provoking the ire of the bond markets.

Despite fears that the country is being pushed back into recession, the government will not fundamentally change tack.

"We have got a deficit reduction plan that has brought us record low interest rates," Osborne said. "We are absolutely going to stick to that plan because that is what is helping Britain weather this international debt storm and is also helping us lay the foundations of a stronger economy."

LOW BORROWING COSTS

Britain has enjoyed record-low borrowing costs thanks to its perceived status as a safe-haven from the euro zone debt crisis, which helps alleviate the pressure on public finances.

The yield on ten-year gilts has been trading at 2.3 percent, well below the 3.8 percent average rate projected by the OBR in March, resulting in a total debt interest saving of 21.5 billion pounds up to 2015/16.

Nonetheless, the government is likely to have to ramp up gilt issuance this year and next, and some analysts caution that backing off from austerity would risk throwing Britain back on the mercy of bond markets who have already downed three euro zone economies and now threaten Italy and Spain.

Recognizing that he has little scope to alter Britain's short-term economic prospects, Osborne will on Tuesday focus on measures that will boost growth in the longer term, such as promoting lending to small businesses and encouraging private sector investment in infrastructure.

He plans to tap British pension funds to provide the bulk of up to 30 billion pounds of investment in building projects, while the government will underwrite 20 billion pounds of loans to smaller companies struggling for credit.

Osborne will also unveil smaller measure aimed at alleviating the squeeze on incomes being endured by Britons at a time of high inflation and muted wage growth.

He is likely to trim a planned 8 percent rise in regulated rail fares next year to 6 percent and freeze local property taxes for a second year running.

He will also double a program providing 15 hours of free childcare per week to disadvantaged young children, which a government source told Reuters on Monday would cost 650 million pounds over the next three years.

Nintendo wants to keep up Black Friday momentum (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? After a strong Black Friday showing, Nintendo now has to focus on maintaining the momentum for its products over the next five weeks of the crucial holiday season, the company's U.S. president told the Reuters Global Media Summit on Tuesday.

Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo of America, said the company records 60 percent of its revenue during the holiday period, 10 percentage points above the industry norm.

"In the next five weeks, I need to sell a lot of Nintendo 3DS, Wii and software," he said.

Investors will be watching Nintendo's holiday sales performance more closely than ever because the company's stock price has been declining and it is forecasting its first annual net loss this year.

Fils-Aime said the company was on track to meet its holiday sales targets and blamed the soaring yen for the company's financial problems this year.

"Every dollar I send back to Japan is worth less, so for us as a business, what I need to do is to focus on selling more hardware, more software and drive revenue as best as I can because I can't impact the currency markets," he said.

Nintendo would like to keep up the pace of its Black Friday sales, when the largest retailers in the U.S. discounted video game products, using them as a loss leader to bring consumers into the stores. The majority of Nintendo's sales are in the U.S.

Wal-Mart sold a limited edition blue Wii console for $99.96 that sold out on Black Friday, for instance.

"Wal-Mart lost money on every Wii they sold. We did not lose money on it," Fils-Aime said, declining to comment on how much money the big-box retailer lost on the deal.

A Wal-Mart spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Nintendo said it sold more than 500,000 Wii units on Black Friday, along with record sales of the 3DS and new games such as "Super Mario 3D Land" and "Zelda: Skyward Sword." Its new "MarioKart 7" game which comes out in December is expected to also sell well.

Microsoft said on Tuesday it sold 960,000 Xbox consoles during the week of Black Friday, its best week of sales ever.

WII U

Nintendo's next big product launch is the Wii U, the first home console to hit the market in years and the follow-up to its smash hit Wii console.

The new console, which features a touch-screen controller and high definition graphics, will come out sometime between April and December 2012.

Fils-Aime said Nintendo has learned a lot from the mistakes it made during the 3DS launch, which lacked strong first-party titles -- meaning games made by Nintendo -- at the start.

The initial price on the 3DS was also too high, something that Nintendo will be careful about this time around, he said.

"We had to go back and reduce the price of 3DS and we certainly don't want to go through that when we launch Wii U," Fils-Aime said.

Britain pulls embassy staff out of Iran: sources (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? Britain has evacuated all its diplomatic staff from Iran, Western diplomatic sources told Reuters on Wednesday, a day after protesters stormed and ransacked its embassy and a residential compound.

Britain said it was outraged by the attacks and warned of "serious consequences." The U.N. Security Council condemned the attacks "in the strongest terms." U.S. President Barack Obama called on Iran to hold those responsible to account.

No comment was immediately available from the British government on the reported withdrawal of embassy staff from Iran.

On Tuesday, Iranian protesters stormed two British diplomatic compounds in Tehran, smashing windows, torching a car and burning the British flag in protest against new sanctions imposed by London.

The attacks occurred at a time of rising diplomatic tension between Iran and Western nations, which last week imposed fresh sanctions over Tehran's nuclear program that they believe is aimed at achieving the capability of making an atomic bomb.

Iran, the world's fifth biggest oil exporter, says it wants nuclear plants only for the generation of electricity.

The embassy storming was also a sign of deepening political infighting within Iran's ruling hardline elites, with the conservative-led parliament attempting to force the hand of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and expel the British ambassador.

"Radicals in Iran and in the West are always in favor of crisis ... Such radical hardliners in Iran will use the crisis to unite people and also to blame the crisis for the fading economy," said political analyst Hasan Sedghi.

Several dozen protesters broke away from a crowd of a few hundred outside the main British embassy compound in Tehran, scaled the gates, broke the locks and went inside.

Protesters pulled down the British flag, burned it and put up the Iranian flag, Iranian news agencies and news pictures showed. Inside, the demonstrators smashed windows of office and residential quarters and set a car ablaze, news pictures showed.

One took a framed picture of Queen Elizabeth, state TV showed. Others carried the royal crest out through the embassy gate as police stood by, pictures carried by the semi-official Fars news agency showed.

All embassy personnel were accounted for, a British diplomat told Reuters in Washington, saying Britain did not believe that any sensitive materials had been seized.

Demonstrators waved flags symbolizing martyrdom and held aloft portraits of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who has the final say on matters of state in Iran.

Another group of protesters broke into a second British compound at Qolhak in north Tehran, the IRNA state news agency said. Once the embassy's summer quarters, the sprawling, tree-lined compound is now used to house diplomatic staff.

An Iranian report said six British embassy staff had been briefly held by the protesters. British Foreign Secretary William Hague said the situation had been "confusing" and that he would not have called them "hostages."

"Police freed the six people working for the British embassy in Qolhak garden," Iran's Fars news agency said.

A German school next to the Qolhak compound was also damaged, the German government said.

BRITAIN OUTRAGED

Police appeared to have cleared the demonstrators in front of the main embassy compound, but later clashed with protesters and fired tear gas to try to disperse them, Fars said. Protesters nevertheless entered the compound a second time, before once again leaving, it said.

British Prime Minister David Cameron chaired a meeting of the government crisis committee to discuss the attacks, which he said were "outrageous and indefensible."

"The failure of the Iranian government to defend British staff and property was a disgrace," he said in a statement.

"The Iranian government must recognize that there will be serious consequences for failing to protect our staff. We will consider what these measures should be in the coming days."

The United States, alongside the European Union and many of its member states also strongly condemned the attacks.

There have been regular protests outside the British embassy over the years since the 1979 Islamic revolution that toppled the U.S.-backed shah, but never have any been so violent.

The attacks and hostage-taking were a reminder of the 1979 takeover of the U.S. embassy in Tehran carried out by radical students who held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days. The United States cut diplomatic ties with Iran after the hostage-taking.

When fitness takes a happy holiday (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? It's the season when yoga classes are canceled and gyms go on holiday schedules, so to avoid the fitness consequences of all those Christmas parties, experts suggest making a workout plan and sticking to it.

"I tell my clients to make sure they have a routine in their back pocket," said Colorado-based fitness instructor Stacey Lei Krauss, "something equipment-free that can be done in a small space, especially if you don't have easy access to a gym over the holidays."

Krauss, who created a fitness DVD called "Willpower and Grace," said those are qualities we're apt to abandon to family and friends during the holiday season.

"It's expected. It's family time; but giving back to yourself is just as important," she said. "Will power leads to self-confidence. Will power is self-control: the ability to manage yourself, regardless of what's happening around you. "

So when Krauss goes home for the holidays, she'll stick to her morning run and skip the big family breakfast.

"My mother will say, 'Oh, do you need to work out now?' I'll say, 'Yes,'" she explained. "We need to stay on track with what works for us."

Connecticut-based exercise instructor Ellen Barrett's yoga-based classes stress the mind-body connection.

During the holidays mental fatigue can weigh you down as surely as that extra cup of egg nog, she believes, but strengthening the spirit may be as simple as downing a glass of water.

"Drink a lot of water. It carries oxygen that will keep you alert, so emotional fatigue won't set in as quickly," she said.

And get moving in the morning.

"Do something. Take a 20 minute walk, even if its pitch black outside," she advised.

Even if the exigencies of family and season annihilate the best workout intentions, Barrett said it is still possible to pursue a healthy lifestyle.

"Don't think exercise is the only way to stay well," she said. "Do a salt scrub, or hit the juice bar for a couple of shots of wheat grass. You'll feel good and you'll have gotten your veggies."

To counterbalance seasonal excess, Jessica Matthews, spokesperson for the American Council on Exercise (ACE), advocates moderation.

"Shift your mindset from that all-or-nothing mentality," said Matthews, an exercise physiologist based in San Diego, California.

"We actually measured muscle activity to find the most effective exercises," she said.

The lunges, squats, crunches and extensions target those problem areas of the butt (glutes), the core (abdominals), and the upper arms (triceps).

At 84 years old, fitness instructor Ann Smith, creator of the DVD "Stretching for Seniors," said she mainly advises her holiday-stressed clients to relax and have a good time.

"Trust yourself. Trust your instincts," said Smith, whose training and love of dance she learned from her mother, an interpretive artist of the Isadora Duncan period.

"All you need is to eat, sleep and move every day," Smith said. "Walk. Scrub the floor. And if you can't think of anything to do, then start singing. Singing is good exercise."
