Marquez knocks out Pacquiao in 6th round

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Juan Manuel Marquez knocked Manny Pacquiao out cold with a vicious right hand at the end of the sixth round Saturday night, putting a ferocious end to the fourth fight between the two boxers.

Pacquiao had been down in the third round but knocked Marquez down in the fifth and the two were exchanging heavy blows in the sixth round before Marquez threw a right hand that flattened Pacquiao face down on the canvas at 2:59 of the sixth round.

The referee waved the fight to an end as Marquez celebrated and the sold-out crowd at the MGM erupted. Pacquiao was down for about two minutes before his handlers managed to get him up.

After being helped to his corner, Pacquiao sat on a stool, blew his nose and stared vacantly ahead as his handlers cut his gloves off. It was a stunning end to a furious fight and it may have signaled the end of Pacquiao's career.

"I threw a perfect punch," Marquez said. "I knew Manny could knock me out at any time."

Marquez had vowed to finally beat Pacquiao after losing two close fights and settling for a draw in the first fight. But after Pacquiao knocked him down in the fifth round and was landing big left hands, it looked like it would be Pacquiao's night.

The two came out for the sixth round and the pace was just as relentless. Both were landing big punches and both were brawling when suddenly as the round came to close Marquez shot out a right hand that landed flush to the jaw of Pacquiao, who crumpled to the canvas in a heap.

"I felt he was coming to knock me out the last three rounds and I knew he was going to be wide open," Marquez said.

It was the second loss in a row for Pacquiao, who dropped a decision to Timothy Bradley in June and who had vowed to regain his prominence in the ring.

Pacquiao was aggressive from the opening bell, but paid the price in the third round when he got by a Marquez right hand that put him down. Pacquiao got back up and seemingly took control of the fight, dropping Marquez in the fifth round and landing the bigger punches until he was dropped

"I got hit by a punch I didn't see," Pacquiao said.

Pacquiao, who earned more than $20 million for the fight, was ahead 47-46 on all three scorecards after the fifth round.

There was no title at stake in the 147-pound fight, but that didn't stop 16,348 fans from filling the MGM Grand Arena and roaring in unison from the opening bell as the two fighters went after each other.

Ringside punching stats underscored the ferocity of the bout, showing Pacquiao landing 94 of 256 punches to 52 of 246 for Marquez. But it was the one big right hand from Marquez that counted more than anything, knocking Pacquiao out for the first time in a career that goes back 17 years.

"He was in charge," Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach said. "He just got a little too careless and got hit with a punch he didn't see."

Promoter Bob Arum immediately said he could see a fifth fight between the two boxers, and a dazed Pacquiao seemed to agree.

"Why not?" he said.

Pacquiao weight the class limit of 147 pounds, but it was Marquez who looked like the stronger fight entering the ring after having bulked up with the help of a strength conditioner even though he weighed in at 143 pounds. In their earlier fights, Pacquiao had been the bigger punchier, knocking Marquez down a total of four times, but on this night it was Marquez who had the biggest punch.

The stunning knockout was the first real loss by Pacquiao in seven years. He lost a close decision to Bradley in his last fight, but most ringside observers believed he had won it fairly convincingly.

Marquez improved to 55-6-1 with 40 knockouts, while Pacquiao fell to 54-5-2.

UFC on Fox 5 recap

Even though this is the part where I talk football this is a "sports" blog so I gotta talk somewhat about anther sport. Like MMA and most notibly the UFC. In case you missed last Saturday's event Ben Henderson def. Nate Diaz. Rory Macdonald def. BJ Penn. Guttaffasson def. Maricio Rua.
Now each win has a significant impact on their weight division.
First Gustaffasson's win means that Jon Jones's next opponent is set in stone Gustaffasson. With guys like Phil Davis an Ryan Badar losing their last fight. And Machida, Jackson, and Evans already given their chance Gustaffasson is no doubt Bones's next opponent.
Next Macdonald over Penn. penn will probably retire after this lost or maybe have onerous go around but either way it doesn't matter. But the guy to watch is Macdonald who's been called the next GSP however the real GSP is live a ready to defend his title. Much like the light heavyweight the welterweights next title fight is set in stone.
With Henderson's win the UFC might need to watch out. The last few years biggest fights was either lightweight or light heavywheight. With Edgar gone off with his Jose Aldo super fight the UFC's lightwieght division might be headed to Te crapper.

You're not smart enough to read Wikipedia

21 hrs.

From socialist hair to serial killers, and all the Justin Bieber-related topics in between, Wikipedia does a fine job feeding fun facts to us ADHD Internet surfers looking to distract ourself with some quick arcana. But?when it comes to serious learning ??the stuff that?maybe?you were relieved to get a C+ on back in school ? Wikipedia may be leaving us in the dust. That's the preliminary finding from a Japanese study presented at the Conference on Information and Knowledge Management in Maui. ?

"Although Wikipedia articles are frequently listed by average search engines on top ranks, they are often too difficult for?average?readers searching (for)?information about difficult queries," reads the abstract of the study. To arrive at this conclusion, researchers compared corresponding?entries on English Wikipedia, Simple Wikipedia (a dumbed-down version of the main site), and that Willy Loman of collected?facts, Encyclopedia Britannica.?

The rogues' gallery of difficult reads, according to the research team, includes entries under Computing, Economics, History, Literature, Mathematics,?Philosophy, and the worst of the worst, Biology and Chemistry.?

Eleven years into its?existence ? with more than 4.1 million?articles in its English version alone and 23 million worldwide ??Wikipedia has become in some ways more of a?creative outlet for its contributing know-it-alls than a resource for?the the average human looking to lose his or her ignorance.

"Curious but not unexpected," is how?Andrew Lih, author of "The Wikipedia Revolution," reacted to the study's results. He pointed to?the study called out in the November 2012 Wikimedia Research Newsletter,?where it was?compared to similar findings.

The thing to understand about Wikipedia, is that "it's always been a community of eventualism," Lih told NBC News ? citing the?Wikipedia community's self-described?tendency to focus?"on the?eventual?value of Wikipedia in the long-term rather than the?immediate?value."

"The article may not be great at the?time its posted, but with more eyeballs and input, it gets better,?more accurate, and of higher quality," said Lih, who is also a journalism professor at the?University?of Southern California.?

That's the benefit of allowing pretty much anybody ? along with a dedicated team of paid and volunteer moderators ? edit Wikipedia, a site that bore the early motto,?"There is no deadline."?

"The counterpoint," Lih said, "is that readability may?go down."

Not readability among the qualified experts obsessing over?the entry on, I dunno,?Fermat's?Last Theorem, but readability among those of us who can't even do math in our heads (shut up!), but want to get an idea of what that's all about because Picard and Riker were blathering?about it in that one "Star Trek: The Next Generation" rerun.

For us, the Fermat's Last Theorem, and all related Wikipedia?entries for that matter, might as well be in Greek, or in some other foreign language we probably don't know.?

Reading is easier on?Simple Wikipedia,?but Lih doesn't consider it useful to?compare the two. "The Simple Wikipedia doesn't?have a high standing in the Wikipedia community," he said, adding that its purpose was never fully established.??Is it for people under the age 14, or just a simpler version of complex articles??"There's never been a clear idea for it, other than a much simpler read."?

How much simpler?

Here's the first paragraph from?Wikipedia's entry on the Sun:

The Sun is the star at the center of the Solar System. It is almost perfectly spherical and consists of hot plasma interwoven with magnetic fields.[12][13] It has a diameter of about 1,392,684?km,[5] about 109?times that of Earth, and its mass (about 2?1030?kilograms, 330,000?times that of Earth) accounts for about 99.86% of the total mass of the Solar System.[14] Chemically, about three quarters of the Sun's mass consists of hydrogen, while the rest is mostly helium. The remainder (1.69%, which nonetheless equals 5,628?times the mass of Earth) consists of heavier elements, including oxygen, carbon, neon and iron, among others.[15]

And here's what?Simple?Wikipedia says:

The Sun is the star at the center of the Solar System. It is seen in the sky and gives light to the Earth. When the Sun is in the sky, it is day. When the Sun is not in the sky it is night. The planets, including Earth, go around it.

Note how Simple Wikipedia's first paragraph on the Sun doesn't even require footnotes and sourcing ...?because, duh.

Oddly enough, not all of the egg-heady disciplines were accused of excessive difficulty. A notable exception was Computing, whose articles scored well in both how sentences were structured and how much new vocabulary was foisted upon the reader. (We'll just pretend there's no bias in the fact that a?computer algorithm made this?judgment call ? just sayin'!)

Regardless of how deep this study goes, or how spot-on it is, you definitely?shouldn't need AP classes to read and understand Wikipedia. It's not hard to understand how Wikipedia got that way, but it's a little trickier trying to see where a solution will come from.?

"It's harder to gauge readers," Lih said. "They don't really stick around and comment."?The researchers suggest offering them a way to flag "poorly comprehensible content." Maybe asking readers to?pour out their feelings following a dense brief on covalent bonds is too much to ask, but how about an "I don't understand!" button??

Helen A.S. Popkin goes blah blah blah abut the Internet. Tell her to get a real job on?Twitter?and/or?Facebook. Also,?Google+.

Move over iPod Shuffle: Here comes Samsung’s Galaxy Muse MP3 player

Samsung Galaxy Muse

Samsung has just launched its $50 Galaxy Muse MP3 player, an accessory to its existing line of Galaxy smartphones.

It?s no secret that Samsung?s Galaxy smartphones rule the mobile market when it comes to Android handsets, but now the Korea-based company is dipping into the portable music industry as well.

On Friday, Samsung officially launched its $50 Galaxy Muse MP3 player. Unlike iOS devices, users do not need to connect their devices to a PC to transfer and sync music files. The Galaxy Muse comes with a USB cable that connects the MP3 player to another Galaxy handset and lets owners transfer music directly via Android?s Muse Sync app.

The Galaxy Muse maintains the signature design of the rest of Samsung?s Galaxy brand. It has the rounded edges and Pebble Blue and Marble White color scheme present on most Samsung gear this year. The Muse features up to six hours of play time, 4GB of memory and audio provided by Samsung SoundAlive technology.

Samsung touts its Galaxy Muse as an optimal smartphone replacement for the gym or any other ?on the go? scenarios. It also comes with a built-in clip to allow users to attach the device to an article of clothing while listening to music.

?The Galaxy Muse expands the Samsung Galaxy Product portfolio to offer music on- the- go in a compact and lightweight player, with songs shared directly from out award-winning smartphones,? Kevin Packingham, chief product officer at Samsung Mobile, said in a statement. ?Muse is the latest example of Samsung delivering another outlet for content consumption across the entire spectrum of consumer electronics.?

Samsung?s offering is priced similarly to Apple?s iPod Shuffle?-?it?s direct competitor. Both device?s cost $50 and act as an accessory to their respective iOS and Galaxy-branded products. It?s not the most highly-anticipated release from Samsung, but it?s interesting to see someone else trying to give Apple a run for their money in the MP3 market. For those seeking accessories for music-loving Android geeks this holiday season, the Galaxy Muse could be a nice little stocking stuffer.?

ESPN Power Rankings Week 14 (NFL)

1. Texans They did it, last week the Texans got a huge win over the titens by actually showing their dominance. While the last two weeks they've made me sceptical, the Texans went out and took care of buisness. MY RANK (1)

The power rankings have a huge potential for shape-up with two of the confrences in the potential for being clitched. The Texans face the patiroits and the Ravens and Broncos have done poorly in confrence. Monday night rarely needs a reason to be watched but this one is huge argueably a "Game of the Year" type game.

 2. Falcons Once again the Falcons are in the top five which makes me chuckel in it of it self. The best win on the falcons schedule is their win over an uncordinated Broncos week two (which was only by 6) and a win over the Chargers. That is of course not including divisional play. So at the end of the day the only game on the falcons whole schedule that will tell us anything about how good they are is week 15 against the New Giants. MY RANK (9)

3. Patriots After a 3-3 start and everyone wondered if the Patriots we're still The Patriots they have one 6 strait and might just take the AFC from the Texans. With the best QB in the League combined with a dominant one- two at tight end that need to get healthy. An improving defense along with a solid running back core has made them the team to beat and the once again winners of the AFC east. MY RANK(2)

4. 49ers I had a hunch Collin would struggle however the performance he had was horrific. While they've looked poorly in some games its usually their quarter-back to blame. These aren't your granddaddy Niners. They are certainly a team to watch for the super bowl but I'm not sure if they have the QBs to get them there. MY RANK (4)

5. Broncos After their own 2-3 start many people wondered if Peyton was still Peyton that we knew. Now that he's found his rhythm Peyton might even look better than before. It's all about being hot late and nobody's hotter than the 7 win Broncos with two great options at running-back, a solid receiving core, and an underrated defense there's no doubt that the Broncos are scary. But you add in Peyton Manning to that mix, and its lights out. (3)

Protecting our mobile ad network

We recently described some of the work that we do to keep ads safe, and our broader efforts to protect against invalid activity in the AdSense network. Today, we want to share some of the ways that we’re protecting ads on mobile networks.

We’ve adapted many of our systems for protecting desktop ads to do the same for mobile ads. These include automatically discarding invalid traffic as it occurs, refunding any money from this traffic, and investigating each and every claim to make our systems better. You can learn more about why and how we do this in the Ad Traffic Quality Resource Center.

But mobile-specific attributes like touch screens, app usage, and portability require us to adapt our approach to the platform. For example, it’s important that our systems are driving intentional clicks on ads, which is more complicated on mobile due to the limited space on a phone and the relative inaccuracy of a finger. Our mobile-specific ad formats help minimize unintentional clicks by clearly delineating ads from content. In addition, text-based mobile ads require an additional click if users accidentally click on the edge of an ad.

Protecting our mobile ad network also means ensuring that we provide a good ad experience within apps. We’ve seen that refreshing in-app ads too quickly leads to a poor user experience and lower advertiser value. That’s why we’ve recently increased AdMob’s minimum refresh rate to 30 seconds. We’ve seen this increase publishers’ fill rates dramatically, and improve traffic quality on the refreshed ads by 26%.

The AdMob Ads SDK also provides a safe environment for ads within mobile apps. The SDK enables publishers to incorporate a variety of formats, allows advertisers to choose which apps to show up in, and enables our team to analyze signals that indicate that ads are being displayed and used properly.

On these and all ads, our team constantly monitors and re-evaluates how we detect invalid activity. We’ve updated our detection algorithms to keep up with the steady stream of new mobile devices and implementations, improving the quality of mobile ad traffic by over 12% since 2011. We’ve also disabled thousands of non-compliant mobile publishers in 2012 and returned millions of dollars, including Google’s share, to affected advertisers.

Lastly, we’ve developed the AdMob publisher best practices guide to help publishers create a good experience for users and advertisers, so that publishers can get good long-term performance and avoid problems with invalid activity.

Texans @ Titans\ This is the most obvious one of the day the Titens are coming off their loss to the Jags yes that's right the Jags Texans all the way, hopefully convincingly.
Panthers @ Chiefs\ Panthers looked amazing last week and I know it was against the Eagles but come on this is the Cheifs
49ers @ Rams\ This one might be closer than everyones thinking in St.Louis look for a struggling Kapernik to be the main reason why this game is close
