HTC scraps large-screen Windows phone, citing low resolution

The new HTC Butterfly smartphone is on display during a news conference to launch the product in Taipei, Taiwan, last week. (Pichi Chuang, Reuters)

HTC Corp. scrapped plans to produce a large-screen smartphone using Microsoft Corp.'s operating system because the screen would have had lower resolution than competing models, a person familiar with the project said.

The Windows software doesn't support resolutions as high as that on Google Inc.'s Android platform, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the information isn't public.

Chief executive officer Peter Chou's decision to halt the project using Windows Phone 8 software leaves HTC with only Android for phones measuring larger than 5 inches diagonally, dealing a blow to Microsoft in its efforts to win share from Google and Apple Inc. Taoyuan, Taiwan-based HTC had planned to introduce the device next year to claw back share from Samsung Electronics Co., which offers Galaxy Note devices with larger screens using Android.

Cheryl Chang, a Taipei-based spokeswoman for Microsoft, the world's biggest software maker, declined to comment. HTC declined to comment in an e-mail.

Windows Phone 8, released in October, supports screen resolution of 720 horizontal lines, lower than the 1,080 lines in displays available on Android phones and tablets. Microsoft also limits which processors can be used with manufacturers' devices.

HTC concluded that a larger-screen Windows Phone 8 phone wouldn't be competitive against Android devices from HTC, Samsung and others, the person said.

Bradesco increases banking app downloads by 31x, drops cost-per-download 70% with AdWords

Banco Bradesco, founded in 1943, is the second-largest private bank in Brazil, with more than 4,600 branches and 47,000 automatic teller machines across the country. Bradesco created a mobile app to provide consumer banking services like checking account balances, paying bills and transferring money between accounts, to its on-the-go customers. Bradesco teamed up with one of its online agencies, One Digital, to promote their latest app across Google AdWords Search and Display solutions. The team focused on driving cost-effective app downloads with the help of the Conversion Optimizer for mobile apps, a bidding feature that uses historical conversion performance data to automatically optimize ad placement so ads show more often when conversions are likely to occur.

Luca Cavalcanti, Director of Digital Channels, said: "Our apps are a key way for us to engage with our users and deliver the value they need. Promoting our apps with Google helped us to exceed our return on investment goals. With AdWords, we've dropped cost-per-download by 70%. Google is an important mobile partner for promoting our apps."

Bradesco promoted their mobile apps with ads on Google Search and the Google Display Network and used the Conversion Optimizer for apps to reach their app download and cost-per-download goals.

  • Nearly 1 billion ad impressions and 4.4 million clicks during the first month
  • Top 5 Ranking in Finance category of Google Play apps on average
  • 31x increase in app downloads
  • 70% decrease in cost-per-download (decrease from greater than R$5 to less than R$2)
To learn more about how Bradesco exceeded their app download goals, see here for the full case study.

4 Lessons I Learned From My Daughter | World of Psychology

4 Lessons I Learned From my DaughterRecently, my daughter turned 4 years old. I cannot believe how fast the time has gone. It feels like it was only yesterday that we brought her home from the hospital, all 8.6 pounds of her. I still remember the newness of those early days. The Olympics had just finished, and the 2008 presidential election was under way.

Back then, four years felt like the distant future, and yet here we are. As one friend shared, once you have a child, ?The days are long, but the years

Toward a new model of the cell: Everything you always wanted to know about genes

Dec. 16, 2012 ? Turning vast amounts of genomic data into meaningful information about the cell is the great challenge of bioinformatics, with major implications for human biology and medicine. Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and colleagues have proposed a new method that creates a computational model of the cell from large networks of gene and protein interactions, discovering how genes and proteins connect to form higher-level cellular machinery.

The findings are published in the December 16 advance online publication of Nature Biotechnology.

"Our method creates ontology, or a specification of all the major players in the cell and the relationships between them," said first author Janusz Dutkowski, PhD, postdoctoral researcher in the UC San Diego Department of Medicine. It uses knowledge about how genes and proteins interact with each other and automatically organizes this information to form a comprehensive catalog of gene functions, cellular components, and processes.

"What's new about our ontology is that it is created automatically from large datasets. In this way, we see not only what is already known, but also potentially new biological components and processes -- the bases for new hypotheses," said Dutkowski.

Originally devised by philosophers attempting to explain the nature of existence, ontologies are now broadly used to encapsulate everything known about a subject in a hierarchy of terms and relationships. Intelligent information systems, such as iPhone's Siri, are built on ontologies to enable reasoning about the real world. Ontologies are also used by scientists to structure knowledge about subjects like taxonomy, anatomy and development, bioactive compounds, disease and clinical diagnosis.

A Gene Ontology (GO) exists as well, constructed over the last decade through a joint effort of hundreds of scientists. It is considered the gold standard for understanding cell structure and gene function, containing 34,765 terms and 64,635 hierarchical relations annotating genes from more than 80 species.

"GO is very influential in biology and bioinformatics, but it is also incomplete and hard to update based on new data," said senior author Trey Ideker, PhD, chief of the Division of Genetics in the School of Medicine and professor of bioengineering in UC San Diego's Jacobs School of Engineering.

"This is expert knowledge based upon the work of many people over many, many years," said Ideker, who is also principal investigator of the National Resource for Network Biology, based at UC San Diego. "A fundamental problem is consistency. People do things in different ways, and that impacts what findings are incorporated into GO and how they relate to other findings. The approach we have proposed is a more objective way to determine what's known and uncover what's new."

In their paper, Dutkowski, Ideker and colleagues capitalized upon the growing power and utility of new technologies like high-throughput assays and bioinformatics to create elaborately detailed datasets describing complex biological networks. To test the approach, the scientists pulled together multiple such datasets, applied their method, and then compared the resulting "network-extracted ontology" to the existing GO.

They found that their ontology captured the majority of known cellular components, plus many additional terms and relationships, which subsequently triggered updates of the existing GO.

Neither Ideker nor Dutkowski say the new approach is intended to replace the current GO. Rather, they envision it as complementary high-tech model that identifies both known and uncharacterized biological components derived directly from data, something the current GO does not do well. Moreover, they note a network-extracted ontology can be continuously updated and refined with every new dataset, moving scientists closer to the complete model of the cell.

MoreFrames Animation: world-class animation studio brings Erie to life

Erie Reader Animation Cover

For a little while, I was an exclusive member of the Erie Pa. Rob & Nino club.

Not the actual club, mind you. I didn?t sign up for an email newsletter or customized texts, but I did get to sit on a couch with the MoreFrames Animation crew and watch their latest project, the music video for Swedish dance-pop duo Rob & Nino?s latest single ?I Just Wanna,? before anyone else.

It was like I was privy to a wonderful secret, at least as much of a secret as one can be part of when millions of people have experienced it, albeit unknowingly. Before having run into a couple of members of the MoreFrames crew at the Erie Art Museum a few months before, I had no idea who they were or what they did, yet people from across the world have seen the fruits of their labor.

Just who are these low-profile animation rock stars? You can call them artists, dreamers, or even fools, if you?re inclined to think in such a pessimistic way, but they?re just regular people like you and me. They just happen to have their own animation studio in Erie.

It?s not often that you see disembodied 8-bit heads floating on a screen affixed above a stage, but that?s what was in front of me. Below the pixilated heads there?s a rating for strength, speed, and intelligence, with special abilities ranging from ?Gangam Style? to ?Donuts.? Eventually, four people matching the blocky faces took their places in the chairs situated beneath. From left to right, Jordan Held, Gus Trauth, Adam Calfee, and Ron Levellie, the brains behind the animated brawn of MoreFrames, sat in front of a packed crowd.

We were at the Erie Art Museum, where I had first met some of the members a few months before. The crowd was there for the kick-off party for FILM, a weekly film series celebrating the social and cultural experience of cinema, with the draw-daddies being the special guests. The room was abuzz with the voices of trendily-dressed guests with drinks in hand, all packed into the theater area. My once-exclusive membership to the animated wonders of MoreFrames, including my special sneak peak at the Rob & Nino music video, had been extended to about a hundred new people when a half-hour featurette of their work was shown on the main screen right before the quartet took the stage.

The group hadn?t made too many efforts to make their collective presence known. The kick-off party made for a good introduction, as the crowd was wowed by the various music videos, motion comics, bumpers, and other impressive snippets that the crew has pumped out of their humble studio on Peach Street across from the King?s Rook.

In fact, for a rather anonymous company located in Erie, MoreFrames has been bringing in widely recognizable clients, such as the Halo video game franchise (yes, the massively popular one with Master Chief) and popular metal band Lamb of God. It?s even more impressive when you take the fact that MoreFrames is only a few years old.

While the company was made official around the end of 2009, the beginning of MoreFrames starts with a school project near and dear to the hearts of the animators ? ?Moonboy.?

Adam?s senior project at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania brought the team together for the first time. While Adam was in his fourth year, Ron was a year ahead of him, Jordan and Gus the grade below. In addition to the future MoreFrames crew, several students from the animation department came together for the project, helping to fuel Adam?s visions of a career after Edinboro.

?I always had the idea to start something after graduation rather than try to get a job,? Adam said. ?I was always trying to gather everybody that I thought would be good to do that and tried to push on ?Hey, after graduation we?re going to start a studio, yeah, yeah???

While the idea of a new animation studio appealed to many, the plan was left by the wayside after Adam moved to Mississippi, where his parents had relocated while he was in college, to live with them after graduating from Edinboro. ?Moonboy,? however, started picking up steam.

?It got featured, like ?video of the day? and then ?staff pick of the day? [on Vimeo], so that got a crap-ton of views,? Jordan said. ?Then we got into the First Annual Vimeo Festival with Moonboy in the animated shorts category. We went to New York, and it was great.?

Eventually, potential clients began to take notice of the young animators.

?Six months after being down [in Mississippi],? because of Moonboy?s popularity and this little contest I did on a website, this Aniboom contest, we started just getting contacted, like ?Hey, you want to do a music video for us?? which is kind of our whole career so far, which is people just contacting us with ?Hey, you want to do a music video for us???

One of the people contacting the group was a Brooklyn, N.Y. hardcore rapper by the name of Ill Bill, who has been a big fan of the crew, contracting them to make eight music videos. With the influx of projects coming in, the group needed to move from working together over Skype while Adam was in Mississippi and the others remained in Pennsylvania to a central location.

With Gus and Jordan living together in Cambridge Springs and the affordable cost of living in Erie, Adam made the voyage back to The Flagship City, where MoreFrames started becoming a reality.

?MoreFrames was kind of in the air for a while, and it really came out with ?War is My Destiny,? the second music video we did for Ill Bill,? Gus said. ?We even came up, at the Empty Keg [in Edinboro], with the name MoreFrames.?

Soon, the jobs started getting bigger and better. A representative from 343 Industries, a video game development company, contacted the group about having MoreFrames animate a motion comic for the Halo franchise, an offer that the crew eagerly accepted. They spent over a year developing that project, which can be found on the XBox network. Through their work with Ill Bill, the group was contacted by the metal band Lamb of God to create a music video for their song ?Ghost Walking.?

With all the projects coming out of MoreFrames, one would almost expect to see numerous designers and animators walking in and out of their confines, but the four main players ? Adam, Gus, Jordan, and Ron ? make up the majority of the company?s output. Sure, a few interns and the occasional freelancer will swing through and help, but the quartet handles the large workload mostly by themselves.

However, even though MoreFrames is a small animation studio located outside a major city, the combination of talent, drive, and the World Wide Web make for a busy company.

?The Internet has just changed things so much,? said Steve Carpenter, a computer animation professor at Edinboro, who taught all of the MoreFrames crew.? ?You can put things up on YouTube or wherever, so they?re just taking advantage of the situation, really. They are able to compete, price-wise, with anybody.

?They are still a young company, but I see huge potential. I know that Erie is constantly trying to get more businesses to come to town, and I think that having an entertainment component of the whole business makeup adds a different flavor to things.?

Ray Kurzweil becomes a Googler, named Director of Engineering

Come December 17th, futurist extraordinaire Ray Kurzweil will be joining Google's ranks as Director of Engineering to work on projects that involve machine learning and language processing. Specifics regarding those projects, however, haven't yet surfaced. The technologist took the announcement to pat himself on the back about predicting the arrival of self-driving cars and smartphones that can answer questions more than a decade ago, and says he's "thrilled to be teaming up with Google to work on some of the hardest problems in computer science so we can turn the next decade's 'unrealistic' visions into reality." If things pan out how the Google greenhorn predicts, we might just see computers as crafty as Homo sapiens by 2029.
