'Transformers' already highest-grossing film of 2011 (AFP)

LOS ANGELES (AFP) ? After only two weeks in theaters, "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" has taken $261 million at the North American box office, the high-earning film so far for 2011, data confirmed Monday.

The sequel raked in $47.1 million over the weekend and passed "The Hangover Part II" as the highest-grossing film of the year. The big budget action film starring Shia LaBeouf focuses on alien robots in a quest to save the world.

In second place was "Horrible Bosses," a dark comedy starring Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Aniston which grossed $28.3 million on its opening weekend, said industry tracker Exhibitor Relations.

The weekend's other big comedy, "Zookeeper," opened at number three with an estimated $20.1 million in sales. Trailing behind was the animated sequel "Cars 2," which made $15.2 million in its third week.

"Bad Teacher," dropped from number three in last week's rankings to number five with $8.9 million. And in sixth place, Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks teamed up for "Larry Crowne," mustering $5.9 million in the film's second week.

"Super 8" dropped two spots to number seven with $4.8 million, while tween flick "Monte Carlo" brought in $3.8 million at the number eight slot.

"Mr. Popper's Penguins" was in ninth spot with $3.2 million, while superhero action flick "Green Lantern" dimmed to 10th biggest film of the week with $3.1 in sales.
